Washington women’s gymnastics began in 1975, under head coach Dale Shirley, who led the team in its inaugural season to an 8-1 record. Shirley’s Huskies did well his entire tenure, having an undefeated season in 1977. Shirley’s overall record was 58-11 in his five years of coaching at Washington.
Bob Ito became head coach for the 1981 season and would coach for ten years in the program. Under Ito, the team won its first conference championships in 1986, when the conference was called the NorPac Conference. It was also the coach when sophomore Yumi Mordred became the first Husky NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Champion. She was also the first woman to take first place at the NCAA Championships in two individual titles, in vault and balance beam. She also won eight All-American honors.
