The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, led by guest conductor Peter Oundjian, in a program that showcases several American composers, including William Grant Still, George Gershwin, Joel Thompson and Samuel Barber. Violinist and conductor Oundjian has been the Music Director of        such prestigious orchestras as The Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

African American composer William Grant Still Jr. lived from 1895 to 1978 and composed over 150 works, including five symphonies, four ballets, nine operas and thirty choral songs. His awards include three Guggenheim Fellowships in music composition and in 1949 the National Association for American Composers and Conductors award him the citation for Outstanding Service to American Music. His Poem for Orchestra was written in 1944.

Enjoy great performances with Voices of America tickets. George Gershwin, born Jacob Gershwine, was born in 1898 and straddled both popular and classical music. His opera Porgy and Bess, composed with Ira and DuBose Heyward, is considered a classic of American cultures and an important 20th century American opera. His Piano Concerto in F was one of the last pieces he ever performed before his death in 1937.

Atlanta based composer Joel Thompson’s new piece To Awaken the Sleeper draws inspiration from James Baldwin’s Notes of a Native Son. The performance concludes with Samuel Barber’s Symphony No. 1, Op. 9.
