On January 21, 2021, Typhoon released Sympathetic Magic, their fifth full-length album, which was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the lead single "Empire Builder."

Typhoon's music is marked by complex, at times fragmented arrangements and attentive orchestration. Live performances usually have many band members playing at once. The group combines indie rock instrumentals and vocals with violins, percussion, xylophone, brass and a plethora of other instruments, making for inspiring and catchy songs. Their music has been described as being in the vein of groups such as Frightened Rabbit, Bright Eyes and Arcade Fire.
