Founded in 1960 and originally called the Lakehead Symphony Orchestra, the Candian orchestra is based in Thunder Bay, Ontario. They changed their name to its current title in 1970 and have since become known as one of the leading orchestras in North America.
Some of their early success was thanks to Boris Brott, who directed the orchestra from 1967 to 1972 and is one of Canada’s most internationally known conductors thanks to his innovative methods and way of introducing new audiences to classical works. In 1985, they made the move to their permanent home at the 1,100 seat Thunder Bay Community Auditorium where they have performed countless concerts of a wide variety of works. The orchestra employs 30 full-time musicians and performs regularly over a 29-week concert season in addition to performances at festivals outside of their home in Thunder Bay.
