Sondergard was born in Holstebro in 1969 and showed a gift for music at an early age. As a young man, he trained under Gert Mortensen at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, simultaneously performing with the European Union Youth Orchestra. In the early 90s, Sondergard served as a percussionist for the Royal Danish Orchestra, shortly afterward joining the faculty of the Royal Danish Academy of Music. 

In 2005, Sondergard made his first appearance as a conductor, leading the Royal Danish Opera in a performance of Poul Ruders’ Kafka’s Trial. The performance was well-received, and within four years Sondergard had been made principal conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. In the years that followed he held a string of illustrious posts with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Orchestre National de France and Minnesota Orchestra. Sondergard has earned critical praise for his recordings of Per Norgard, Poul Roders and Bent Lorentzen in particular.
