The orchestral suite consists of seven movements, with each named after a planet in the Solar System and its astrological character. The piece is one of the most popular from English composer Gustav Holst who wrote the suite between 1914 and 1917 and has been praised over time for his innovative style.
The orchestral suite had its debut in September of 1918 at the Queen’s Hall in London, where it was led by Holst’s friend and legendary conductor, Adrian Boult. The conductor led future performances of the piece including one with the Royal Philharmonic Society and other early performances included one with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Albert Coates in 1920. The piece was written to be performed with a female chorus in addition to the orchestra and is often presented this way.
