The band was originally formed in 1996 and disbanded in 2003, but there was a brief reunion in 2007 and two more revivals in 2019 and 2020. Phil Elverum has fronted The Microphones every iteration. Elverum is the band's primary composer and producer, but he has worked with other local musicians on his solo projects as well as tours.
While employed at The Business, a record store in his hometown of Anacortes, in the mid-1990s, Phil Elverum became involved with the Washington music scene. Calvin Johnson of K Records was inspired by Elverum's songwriting to sign him to the label. Elverum began producing music at the Dub Narcotic Studios in 1998 and released his debut full-length album, Tests, on Elsinor Records the following year.

PopMatters's Kyle Cochrun writes "The band shirked traditional song structures, buried melodies under dissonance, added or abandoned the rhythm section at unexpected moments, caked guitar distortion on soft-spoken campfire jingles, relished in a decidedly scattershot soundscape, and dismantled any forward momentum they worked to build."
