The Life was written by Cy Coleman and Ira Gasman in 1990 and centers around the struggles of drug addicts, criminals and prostitutes who live on Times Square’s 42nd Street. The main characters Jojo, Sonja, Queen and Fleetwood all dream of a better life while desperately doing what they must to survive on the streets.
Gasman came up with the idea for the musical after witnessing an arrest on 42nd Street, deciding to write a play that gives humanity to those affected by the often overlooked seediness of Times Square.
The Life premiered off-Broadway at the Westbeth Theatre in 1990 and starred Lillias White and Chuck Cooper. Audiences quickly responded to the musical’s compelling characters and unusual subject matter, and by 1997 The Life had moved to Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The Broadway production won two Tony Awards, three Drama Desk Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards.
On the 20th anniversary of the Broadway production, The Life made its UK debut at London’s Southwark Playhouse. The London iteration would win four Off West End Theatre Awards, including for Best Musical Production. Buy The Life tickets to see this unique musical take shape before your very eyes.
