By late 1965, they received their first airplay on several Southern California stations for their version of the Bob Dylan song, "Mr. Jones (Ballad of a Thin Man). In 1966, they peaked the Top 40 charts with their hit single "Where Were You When I Needed You."

In 1967, The Gross Roots debuted their hit single, "Let's Live for Today," which peaked in the Top 10 charts. The song was awarded a golden disc after selling over one million copies. Over the next several years, The Grass Roots continued to produce hit-singles that toped U.S. charts, including "The River Is Wide," "Heaven Knows," "I'd Wait a Million Years" and "Sooner or Later."

The Grass Roots tickets rose in demand with their swift rise in popularity. In 1969, The Grass Roots debuted their album, Leaving it All Behind, which peaked within the top 40s for the United States and Canada charts. 1982 was a massive year for The Grass Roots as they performed an Independence Day concert on the National Mall in D.C. The Grass Roots' first live album, Live at Last, debuted in 2000. The band released their next album, Symphonic Hits, which featured a symphonic quartet a year later. Their second live album, Love Gold, debuted in 2008. After their album success, The Grass Roots focused on touring, including the Happy Together Tour in 2012 and 2015. In addition, they performed at the Flower Power Cruise in 2016.
