The Tricycle Theatre's Anton Philips produced and directed The Amen Corner in 1987, making it the first black-produced and directed play to transfer to the West End of London. In April of 1965, the Original Cambridge Players brought James Baldwin's "The Amen Corner" to Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theater.
The play explores the significance of a church in an African-American family and the influence of economic deprivation on an African-American community as a result of racial prejudice.

The climax of this dramatic gut-wrenching play is an extended confrontation between Margaret, her son, her congregation, and her estranged husband over what they perceive as the hypocritical nature of her religious convictions and the breakdown of her family.
