The members are Nick Yacyshyn, Brian Cook and Aaron Turner. Turner and Yacyshyn founded Sumac in 2014 with the intention of playing a far-out, dense style of heavy metal that would push the boundaries of the genre. The two played their first show as Sumac opened for Deafheaven in Vancouver.
In 2015, Sumac released their debut album The Deal through Profound Lore Records, shortly afterward completing their lineup with the addition of Cook. Later that year, they set off on their first series of North American tours in support of the release. By 2016, Sumac had signed to Thrill Jockey, through which they released their sophomore effort What One Becomes. What One Becomes earned high praise for its introspective lyrics addressing themes of alienation and anxiety. The album has since been covered by a slew of high-profile artists including Kevin Drumm and Samuel Kerridge.
