This supergroup began in 2008 when Tony Levin, who played with Peter Gabriel from 1977 to 2002 and was one of the founding members of King Crimson, released a solo album, Stick Man, with Pat Mastelotto on drums. Levin is a master bass player, who has played on more than 500 albums and helped popularize both the upright bass in rock music and the Chapman Stick.
This unique instrument was invented in the ‘70s and is essentially a polyphonic 12-string bass synthesizer. Levin and Mastelotto recruited Michael Bernier to also play the Chapman Stick, and the trio released their first album Soup in 2010. Bernier then left the band and Markus Reuter replaced him. They released the improvisational EP Absalom in 2011, then the albums Open and Deep in 2012 and 2013. The group also has released more than five live albums and three compilations.
Stick Men’s biggest attraction is the unique instrument that they play, the Chapman Stick. The group started as simply a bass-forward progressive rock band but has evolved into a mix between art rock and progressive metal.
