Past string quartets that have performed the series for the University of Buffalo include the Tokyo, Juilliard, Cleveland and Jupiter Quartets. 

Ludwig van Beethoven lived from 1770 to 1827 and is one of the most respected beloved figures in classical music. His career happened during the transition from the Classical Period to the Romantic Era. He wrote the series of string quartets in 1825 and 1826, while his health was failing. The works were largely ignored while Beethoven was alive. It was only later they were recognized as masterworks. 

Hear the music of one of classical music’s great masters with Slee Beethoven String Quartet Cycle tickets. The performers this year will be the Escher String Quartet out of New York City. The Escher Quartet, named after the Dutch artist M.C. Escher, was formed in 2005. The Quartet’s members are the Resident Artists of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and were awarded the Lincoln Center Avery Fisher Career Grant.

The group tours both domestically and internationally and have performed in the continents of North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The Quartet is probably most famous for its set of recordings of all of Alexander von Zemlinsky’s string quartets. In 2015, the group began to record the quartets of Mendelssohn.
