He would form his own country band with bassist Robert Reynolds, bonding over their love of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Patsy Cline. Paul Deakin would also join the group as the drummer and they chose the name The Mavericks. The Mavericks would then go on to self-release a self-titled debut album in 1990. This album would catch the attention of many big labels and MCA records signed with the group in May of 1991, to which they played their first concert in Nashville.
The Mavericks stopped performing together in 2001, but Malo continued to work with his bandmates while infusing more Latin rhythms into his songs.
