The band was created by Steiner and Sagan while studying music at Notre Dame, and they released their debut album AOID in 2015. The Ratboys rose to prominence after Nuccio and Neumann joined the group in 2017. The first album to feature the full line-up, GN, was met with much critical acclaim. Both Rolling Stone and Uproxx named GN one of the best albums of the year, and the exposure saw the Ratboys begin touring widely alongside similar acts like Wild Pink and Diet Cig.
Though Nuccio and Neumann were later additions, all four members knew each other from childhood. The resulting creative synergy allowed the Ratboys to find their sound early, and critics hailed the group’s raw style and imaginative lyrics. GN enjoyed a burst of media attention, in particular on NPR and MTV. The group released its third album, Printer’s Devil, in 2020. The album proved that the band’s previous successes were more than just a happy accident, as Printer’s Devil earned universal praise for its wistful emotivism and poetic lyrics.
