The team initially struggled, with no coaching having a winning record until Leigh Wallace, who coached from 1925 through 1927, compiling a 9-7 record in his tenure. And then coach Paul V. Keen took the reins, coaching from 1928 to 1939. During his time with the Sooners, Keen led the team to a 51-34-3 record. In addition to that, he led the team to six conference championships and its first National Championship in 1936.
