The Northern Kentucky Norse softball team represents NKU, which is located in Highland Heights, Kentucky. The team competes at the NCAA Division I level as members of the Horizon League. Within the Horizon League, the Norse softball team competes against other top-tier teams such as Cleveland State, Wisconsin-Green Bay and Purdue-Fort Wayne. They play their home games at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field where fans wear their black, gold and white to support their team.

The Northern Kentucky Softball squad played their inaugural season in 1985 with head coach Jane Meier leading the team. The team achieved a winning record in their second season when they finished with a 19-16 win-loss record. In 2005, the NKU softball team set a record for most wins in a season with 55 victories that year. During that time, they were coached by Kathy Stewart, who has also been one of their longest-tenured coaches.

During their time in Division II, Northern Kentucky won two conference tournaments and went to the NCAA Division II Softball Tournament nine times. Northern Kentucky Norse Softball Schedule

The NCAA Division I Softball season runs from February through June. Approximately 286 schools compete at the Division I level each year. Various conferences such as the SEC and the Pac-12 routinely field teams that are highly ranked throughout the country. Washington and Arizona State typically fight for the Pac-12 title each year. In the SEC, Alabama and Tennessee finish at the top of the standings year after year. Premier events like the Texas Invitational are hosted by the University of Texas each year.
