Born in Brooklyn, Joachim began learning piano when she was four years old. At nine she began playing the flute, training at the Juilliard School the following year. She would later graduate from Juilliard’s undergraduate program outright, developing a facility in a variety of genres including classical, rock and alternative rock.
Joachim then pursued graduate studies in sound design at New York City’s New School, soon afterward forming the art-pop duo, Flutronix, and the Chicago chamber ensemble, Eighth Blackbird. A passionate educator, the artist has served on the faculty of Princeton University, the University of Hartford and the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. She has recently served as Director of Contemporary Music at the Perlman Music Program.
In 2019 Joachim released her debut solo album Fanm d’Ayiti, which combines spoken word elements with classical and electronic styles. The album earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best World Music Album. Joachim has since collaborated with artists from several genres including Dan Deacon, the International Contemporary Ensemble and Ski Beatz.
