It proved to be a wise decision and the album was met with acclaim, both from critics and fans alike, and a single from the album 'Carnival' became her first top ten hit. The album eventually went on to sell over five million copies. Merchant's subsequent recordings have been sporadic but invariably well received and she remains one of the most popular performers in the American alternative rock scene.
