The Nanaimo NightOwls were established in the summer of 2020. They got their name from the Nanaimo Owls baseball team, which flourished in the 1920s, paying homage to that legacy. The "Night" refers to how workers of the city installed the floodlights at Serauxmen Stadium. The mascot honors Nanaimo's former mayor Frank Ney.
