The inaugural event was played in 1994 and broadcast and co-sponsored by the broadcast companies Sky Sport and Matchroom Sport as a tournament to bring attention to the game of pool in the UK. The event commemorated the death of American professional player Willie Mosconi, who won the World Straight Pool Champion 19 times.
