James debuted on Broadway in 2010 with a role in the musical production of The Adams Family, which starred Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth. In 2011, she landed roles in Frank Wildhorn’s Wonderland as well as the Broadway revival of Godspell. In 2013, she portrayed Teena Marie in Motown: The Musical. She performed with the troupe for the rest of 2013, leaving in December for a vocal performing tour. She had moonlighted as a solo artist while she performed on Broadway, often with a backing band composed of Matt Fieldes, Chris Fenwick, Damien Bassman and others, playing at numerous New York City Clubs.
