They became known as Moonspell in 1992 when they released the single “Serpent Angel.” Fernando Ribeiro and João Pedro "Ares" Escoval were the two original members of Morbid God who founded Moonspell. Duarte Picoto, Luís Lamelas and Miguel "Mike" Gaspar filled out the rest of Moonspell as original members.
Moonspell released their debut album, Under the Moonspell, in April 1994. They signed with Century Media Records after touring through Portugal and growing in popularity. The band went on a European tour in promotion of their first album with Century Media Records. Wolfheart was released in April 1995 and Moonspell went on tour in support of the band Morbid Angel.
The release of the 1998 album Sin/Pecado began a string of chart-topping albums. Sin/Pecado peaked at number one on the Portuguese album charts. Memorial in 2006 and Extinct in 2015 each topped the Portuguese album charts as well. Moonspell also has had success in Germany as their albums consistently break into the Top 100.
