Their first studio album, Under the Pipal Tree, was released worldwide in 2001. After the success of their first album, Mono spent the next year touring throughout Japan and the United States. Additionally, they released their second album, One Step More And You Die, that same year.

Mono's early success swiftly allowed them to tour in additional countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and the Netherlands. In addition, the band collaborated with musician World's End Girlfriend in 2005. In 2006, Mono furthered their success with the release of You Are There. As Mono tickets gained popularity worldwide, Mono spent most of 2006 and 2007 touring in the United States, Europe and Asia to support their latest album. Mono documented their worldwide 2006-2007 tours in their music documentary, The Sky Remains the Same as Ever.

Mono debuted their fifth studio album, Hymn to the Immortal Wind, in 2009 before they began touring again. The band performed alongside the 24-piece Wordless Music Orchestra for their 10^th anniversary at the Society of Ethical Culture Hall in New York in 2009.

Rays of Darkness debuted in 2014 and contained some of Mono's heaviest material to date. Additionally, the album featured the band's first use of vocals. That same year, Mono released The Last Dawn, which contained the more traditional Mono music that fans knew and loved. Mono's ninth studio album, Requiem for Hell, was released in 2016 and reintroduced strings to their music. In addition, Mono released Nowhere Now Here in 2019 and Hymn to the Immortal Wind – Anniversary Edition in 2019 to commemorate the band's 20^th anniversary.
