Born in Shreveport in 1960, Beasley began learning to play piano at the age of eight. As a teenager, he learned to play several additional instruments including guitar, drums and saxophone. In 1980 Beasley gave his first large-scale concert at Carnegie Hall, where he played alongside John Patitucci and Hubert Laws.
The artist then worked as a session musician for a number of years before touring in the bands of Sergio Mendes and Freddie Hubbard. In 2013 he founded the 15-piece MONK’estra big band, releasing two albums with the group focused on the work of Thelonius Monk. MONK’estra earned rave reviews from prominent jazz critics including Don Heckman and was signed to Mack Avenue Records in 2015.
Over the next two years, the band would achieve four separate Grammy Award nominations. MONK’estra has given celebrated performances at jazz festivals in Monterey, Berlin and Chicago, and has collaborated with artists such as Joey DeFrancesco, Gregoire Maret and Vinnie Colaiuta.
