The Warriors made their debut in the collegiate ranks in the 1954-55 season, when a small budget, new outfits, and varsity jackets were provided by the college. Merrimack hockey faced its first intercollegiate competition in the early years of 1978, when it played Babson College from Massachusetts, as they were finally recognized as a varsity sport in ice hockey. They would go on to play other schools such as Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) that same year; being extremely successful through the late 1970s into the early 1980s. The Warriors won the Division II national championship in 1978 and were runner-up in 1984. They started playing NCAA Division I independently in 1984 but did not compete against mostly Division I teams until they joined Hockey East in 1989. The Serino era began in 1998-99, ushering in yet another period in Merrimack hockey history. Chris Serino was hired as the sixth head coach in program history on April 24, 1998. The Warriors went 11-24-1 in their first season under Serino, and Rejean Stringer was named an All-American for the first time in Merrimack University's history.

Merrimack's senior goaltender and captain Joe Exter helped lead the team to victory in 2002-03 when they won their first-ever regular-season Division I tournament. They would also go on a 4 game winning streak during this time period with wins over Rensselaer College at the 52nd Annual Rensselaer/HSBC Holiday Hockey Tournament as well Wayne State University among others. Finally, top rankings came into play thanks to Merrimack's 2011-12 performance from the USCHO Poll.
