In the late '70s, the artist founded the Meredith Monk and Vocal Ensemble, with whom she produced a number of critically acclaimed compositions in the minimalist style of figures like Philip Glass and Steve Reich. She released her debut album Dolmen Music in 1981. Monk has also written operas and orchestral pieces, for which she has earned several accolades. The most noteworthy of these include a MacArthur Fellowship, an Obie Award for Sustained Excellence and a National Medal of Arts.
