Keyboardist Seals became a member of the Jerry Garcia Band in 1980 and continued in that role until the guitarist and songwriter’s death in 1995. Other than its namesake leader, Seals was the second-longest tenured member of that outfit (bassist John Kahn died in 1996), which had a revolving cast of musicians from its conception in 1975.

It was Garcia’s more straightforward groove-based side project. During his run with the Jerry Garcia Band, the keyboardist toured with the group several times and was featured on “Run for the Roses,” “The Jerry Garcia Band,” and many other recordings released after Garcia’s death. Seals have also played live with Dead bassist Phil Lesch.

His main touring act since then is called Melvin Seals and JGB, which has played live extensively over the last several years. In 2005 he released an album under his name called “Melting Pot.”

Seals also have other ongoing projects. He plays with Oteil and Friends, a collaboration with bassist Burbridge Oteil, who has also worked extensively in the “jam band” genre, and others. Seals’ band The Rock Collection does gigs around San Francisco’s Bay Area, Meanwhile, his most recent project is called The Mix, which fuses, rock with funk, blues and bluegrass. The band promises a “most satisfying blend of natural organic grooves that challenges genre boundaries.”
