He was given his first instrument, a Yamaha keyboard, at the age of three by his grandfather. He was named a Yamaha Artist at the age of 15, the youngest musician ever to be so named. 

At the age of nine, he taught himself to play a Hammond B3 organ. At the age of 13, he was the youngest musician in Hammond’s 80-year history to ever be endorsed by the company. Some of the musicians that Whitaker has performed with include Ray Chew, Christian McBride, Rhoda Scott and Dr. Lonnie Smith.
