He has played many different styles, including nu wave, jazz and rock and roll. He frequently collaborates with musicians such as Tom Waits, avant-garde artist John Zorn, Elvis Costello and Vincio Capossela.

Ribot, who grew up in South Orange, New Jersey, has frequently been used as a session guitarist. He has recorded and been on stage with many artists, including Caetano Veloso, David Sylvian, Jack McDuff and The Lounge Lizards. His first session work was with Tom Waits for Waits’ 1985 album Rain Dogs.  Ribot frequently worked with Waits, helping with songs on many of Waits’ albums, including     Franks Wild Years in 1987, Big Time in 1988, 1999’s Mule Variations and others.

He currently performs with the bands Ceramic Dog, Marc Ribot trio, the Young Philadelphians and Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos. A documentary called The Lost String was made about Ribot in 2008.
