Michel Tremblay is a novelist and playwright from Canada. Born in Montreal in 1942, he first rose to fame through his debut play Les Belles-Soeurs, which introduced working-class joual to the Canadian mainstream. Les Belles-Soeurs garnered both acclaim and criticism, as it upset the Puritanical atmosphere of 1960s Quebec.
Tremblay went on to enjoy an illustrious career, both in film and novels in addition to his plays. He received several awards, including the Chalmers Award and the Molson Prize. In 1999 Tremblay was given the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award, the highest honor for the performing arts in Canada.
