Throwing Muses quickly rose to prominence in Boston’s underground music scene, and by 1987 had been signed to 4AD Records. Later that year they released their debut EP Chains Changed.
In 2001 Hersh set off on a solo career, releasing her debut solo album Sunny Border Blue that year. She gained significant praise from critics for playing all of the instruments on the album, achieving the sound of a full band. Hersh has been hailed by publications like The New York Times for her exploration of themes such as mental illness, loss and alienation.
