The Kingsport Axmen trace their roots to the early 1920s when the city fielded its first minor league team, the Kingsport Indians. In the early '50s, the team played within the Mountain States League. In the years that followed, they played under several names: the Kingsport Orioles, Kingsport Pirates and Kingsport Royals. From 1980 to 2020, the team played as the Kingsport Mets, the minor league affiliate of the New York Mets. 

After the Appalachian League was converted into a collegiate summer league, the team was reborn in its current form as the Kingsport Axmen. They take their name from a reference to pioneer Daniel Boone, who founded the Wilderness Road in the city of Kingsport. For a brief period at the end of the 2021 season, the Axmen played under the name Kingsport Road Warriors, though returned to the Axmen name soon afterward.
