The members are Roger Ojersson, Daniel Moilanen, Niklas Sandin, Anders Nystrom and Jonas Renkse. 

Nystrom and Renkse founded Katatonia in 1991, bonding over their shared love of the death metal subgenre. Though the group began as a duo, they expanded their lineup after finding swift popularity in the city's underground heavy metal scene. Their early albums Brave Murder Day and Dance of December Souls evinced a sombre, death-doom sound which gave way to a more melodic style in the late '90s and early 2000s. 

Late 2000s albums like Night Is the New Day and The Great Cold Distance saw Katatonia take a turn toward more traditional progressive rock flavor which culminated in the gothic rock releases Dead End Kings and The Fall of Hearts. The band has since been cited as an influence by high-profile acts ranging from Amorphis and Gorguts to Forgotten Tomb and Nocturnal Depression.
