He has called himself Johnny A. since the age of eight as his name was constantly being mispronounced. He formed the band The Streets in the 1970s, which performed locally, headlining in Boston clubs and had several popular radio singles in the Boston area, including the song “What Gives,” which occupied the top spot on the local radio station WBCN’s “The Rock of Boston.” The group also was a support act for the national acts Aerosmith and Bob Seger.
