See the celebrated Latin soul musician with Joe Bataan tickets. Joe Bataan is a singer and pianist from New York. Born in 1942 in Spanish Harlem, New York City, Bataan turned to music as a way to avoid falling in with the street gangs of his local neighborhood. In 1965 he formed his first band, Joe Bataan and the Latin Swingers, with whom he established his signature sound which combines elements from doo-wop and Latin boogaloo. Bataan’s talent and innovations caught the attention of Fania records, to which he signed in 1966 to release his debut album Gypsy Woman.
In the early 70s, Bataan formed his own label, Ghetto Records, producing albums for a slew of prominent artists including Eddie Lebron, Paul Ortiz and Papo Felix. Bataan coined the phrase “salsoul” to describe his musical style, a term that caught on in popularity. By the time Bataan withdrew from music, the fame of his salsoul music was rivaled only by Ralfi Pagan.
In 2013 Bataan was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Filipino American National Historical Society. His work has seen use in film, television and video games, most notably in Driver Parallel Lines and She’s Gotta Have It.
