Their first released works were the four-album combined series Zonotope as well as the noise project Diane Kensington Devotional Band.
Nathan grew up in Los Angeles and was a precocious child, learning to play the Simpson’s theme at the age of five. In the school band, Nathan played the bongos as well as drums. Nathan had said they wanted to join a band in school but was turned down because they looked too nerdy. The first group Paper was in was called The Corrupt Ice Cream Vendors, a comedy rock band.

Paper began to produce music in 2009 and their first project, Zonotope, was a concept album consisting of a “four-album propaganda series”. It was created to promote a fictional Southern California-based community called the Temple of Pure Information and Mainframe Devotion.
Another project by Paper was The Diane Kensington Devotional Band, which featured Paper portraying a female who starts a fictional community called “The Wellness Group,” which is focused on traversing the “space between the 1 and 0” through “trance Channels.”
