Jeff Tyzik – born Jeff Tkazyik in Hyde Park New York on August 1, 1951, is a trumpeter, conductor, composer, and arranger. At the age of 9, he started playing cornet but switched to trumpet two years later. He earned two degrees from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York: Bachelor of Music (1973) and Master of Music (1977). He met flugelhornist Chuck Mangione’s band as lead trumpeter and co-producer from 1973 to 1980, appearing on four of Mangione’s albums.
Tyzik’s first solo album, Farthest Corner of My Mind, was released in 1979. It was followed by the albums Prophecy (1980) and Radiance (1982). He also began working with Doc Severinsen, recording two albums with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Tyzik would later win a Grammy Award for producing the 1986 album The Tonight Show Band with Doc Severinson.
Tyzik – along with his friend Allen Vizzutti - was recruited by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in 1983 in order to help them create a pops program for the orchestra. The duo worked with other orchestras nationwide over the next decade working on similar projects. Tyzik was named Principal Pops Conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in 1994. He continued to lead the RPO on various acclaimed projects including the 2007 release of Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, Rhapsody in Blue, which hit Number 3 on the Billboard Classical chart.
