Additionally, Ian works as a successful columnist and science fiction author. Ian was raised on a farm in a rural New Jersey town and later moved to New York where she attended the New York City High School of Music and Art. Her father Victor was a music teacher.

Musically, Ian is inspired by the work of folk legends Joan Baez and Odetta. She is a skilled pianist who also plays organ, harmonica, French horn and guitar.
