In his high school years, he studied with older musicians including blues great Precious Bryant, before joining a country group in Phenix City, Alabama. Most of the songs he plays are in the public domain, and Fussell puts his own style and spin to this older music, with his top-notch guitar skills and unique singing voice. Jake Xerxes Fussell has released multiple full-length albums including his debut LP titled Jake Xerxes Fussell in 2015, followed by What in the Natural World in 2017 and then in 2019 he released Out of Sight.

He has recorded and released numerous singles such as “Have You Ever Seen Peaches Growing on a Sweet Potato Vine?” in 2017, “The River St. Johns” in 2019 and “Love Farewell” in 2021. Fussell has toured all across the United States, first as an opener for Wilco and Bill Callahan and later as a headliner, and has appeared at numerous festivals including the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival and the Brooklyn Folk Festival among others.
