After graduation, Heggie performed with his wife Johanna Harris, touring the country until he was diagnosed with focal dystonia, which caused him to be unable to perform. He took a job in public relations and began composing again around 1993. His big break came when he gave the mezzo-soprano singer Frederica von Stade the music for his composition Three Folk Songs as a gift.

As a result of the piece, Heggie was asked to collaborate with Terence McNally on writing an opera. He was named the CHASE Composer-in-Residence for the San Francisco Opera, affording him the opportunity to compose Dead Man Walking, which launched his career.
