Starting his music career early, Dixon was playing keyboards professionally in his early teens. In his college years, he studied classical piano at the University of Miami, in addition to forming his own band, The Gabe Dixon Band, which relocated to New York City after graduation. That group lasted from 1998 to 2010, during which time they released four full-length albums, starting with their debut More Than It Would Seem in 1999, followed by On a Rolling Ball in 2002, Live at World Café in 2005 and The Gabe Dixon Band in 2008, which had a single released called "Find My Way" that was used in the film The Proposal.
Gabe and the band appeared on the television shows Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, as well as touring across the United States and performing at festivals such as Bonnaroo and High Sierra. While Dixon was musically entrenched with the band, he began performing some shows with top names in music such as Paul McCartney inviting Dixon to play keyboards on the LP Driving Rain and also perform live at the Concert For New York City.
