Born and raised around Modesto, Calif., the mandolinist and songwriter took after various family members when he picked up his first instrument having multiple relatives who were multi-instrumentalists. He soon fell in love with bluegrass music and formed his first band as a teenager.
After moving to Alaska at age 18, Solivan sat as first chair violin in the University of Alaska’s Symphony Orchestra while also playing mandolin in his friend's band and performing locally. He went on to play guitar for the U.S. Navy service band, Country Current, with who he performed and recorded for six years before he founded the popular bluegrass group Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen. After signing with Compass Records, the group released 2013’s On the Edge followed by 2014’s Grammy-nominated Cold Spell. In 2019, Solivan and the group were nominated for Best Bluegrass Album at the Grammy Awards again for the popular album If You Can’t Stand the Heat.
