Born in Chicago in 1977, Catalano began learning to play the sax at seven years old. As a teenager, he lost one of his fingers while working on his car, and was forced to spend a number of years developing a new technique so that he could continue to play. By eighteen years old, Catalano had landed a job touring with Santana, releasing his debut album Cut it Out through Delmark Records in 1988.
Catalano’s debut album appeared on several publications’ Album of the Year lists, including those of Los Angeles Weekly and The Chicago Tribune. The success of Cut it Out saw Catalano begin collaborating with a slew of high-profile artists including Tony Bennett, Kenny Loggins and the Smashing Pumpkins. In 1999 the saxophonist invented a keyboard sampling attachment for his instrument, an attachment which was patented in 2001. Five years later, Catalano’s album Mighty Burner was a top fifteen Billboard hit, an accomplishment he repeated the following year with his album Bang.
