The Alliance Française de New York was founded in 1898 for the purpose of offering French lessons in New York City. The French Institute was founded in 1911 and ran the Museum of French Art in New York City to promote French art in the American metropolis. In 1971, the two institutions joined forces to become the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) and now work as one to offer French lessons to over 6,000 students a year as well as hosting a variety of cultural events focused on promoting French art and culture in its many forms.
The FIAF CinéSalon focuses on offering films that either are French in origin or have France as a central theme, character or backdrop. FIAF CinéSalon tickets give you access to these films either as single films or as part of curated series. Past series have included Wes Anderson’s French Connection, a collection of favorite French films chosen by Academy Award-winning director Wes Anderson, and Paris on Film, a collection of films curated by Richard Peña, Film Studies Professor at Columbia University, that show how filmmakers have portrayed the City of Lights over time and across cultures and genres. Screenings are traditionally followed by receptions and discussions of the films.
