The Vikings won their first CIAA Tournament title in 1969 with Robert Vaughan at the helm. He coached ECSU from the time the program began in 1949 through his retirement in 1986. He also served as the university's first athletic director and chair of the Department of Physical Education. Vaughan led the Vikings to two CIAA championships, repeating in 1981, and recorded 502 career victories. 

ECSU won the championship again in 2007 behind Most Outstanding Player Anthony Hilliard. He was the only player in the conference averaging a double-double with 19.5 points and 10.6 rebounds. He also earned NABC Division II South Atlantic District First Team. Shawn Walker was named CIAA Coach of the Year. The Elizabeth City State Vikings won the CIAA Men’s Basketball Championship again. They came into the tournament as the seventh seed but defeated the first seeded team Virginia Union in the final.
