Blessing first began writing Eleemosynary in 1985. The play revolves around three characters: Dorothea, an eccentric old woman, Artie, her intellectually gifted daughter and Echo, her precocious granddaughter. Artie is estranged from both Dorothea and Echo but is forced to reconnect with the latter when Dorothea suffers a stroke. Though at first both Artie and Echo are loath to discuss their strained relationship, in the end, they accept their need to reconcile and build a life together.
Eleemosynary premiered in 1985 in St. Paul, Minn., at the Park Square Theatre. A positive reception saw the play move to the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York City, where it ran until 1989. Actress Jennie Moreau went on to win a Theatre World Award for her role in the New York City production.
