Eighth Blackbird was founded at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music after the members met while performing in the school’s Contemporary Music Ensemble. In 1996, they won the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, then won the Concert Artists Guild Competition two years later. The successes landed the group their first management contract.
Through the early 2010s, Eighth Blackbird served as artist in residence at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music, then in 2015 became artist in residence at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. To date, the ensemble has won four Grammy Awards and has been hailed by critics as one of the pioneering groups in contemporary classical.
