The band formed in New Orleans in 1991, wanting to bring together the skill and style of each of their previous bands Eyehategod, Crowbar and Corrosion of Conformity. They signed to Elektra Records in 1995, through which they released their debut album NOLA later that year. A runaway success, NOLA reached the top 60 on the Billboard 200.
The band’s successes continued, with their sophomore effort Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow reaching the top 50 of the Billboard 200 and earning the group spots at prominent events like Ozzfest. Their most critically acclaimed release, however, came in 2007 with the release of Down III: Over the Under. Critics raved about the album, citing it as a return to the roots of metal. Down III made the top 30 of the Billboard 200. The band continues to tour and record today, having developed a dedicated cult following for their polished, technically skilled songwriting.
