Deceased was founded in Arlington in 1984 by Fowley, who had a vision of playing a style of heavy metal music even more aggressive than Slayer. They released their first demo tape, The Evil Side of Religion, in 1986. The tape caught the eye of Relapse Records, to which they signed later that year. In 1991, Deceased released their debut album Luck of the Corpse through the label to widespread critical acclaim.
The band developed a devoted underground following in heavy metal circles, and became one of the leading acts in the emerging extreme metal subgenre. Their work would prove a formative influence on later genres such as power metal, nu metal and beatdown hardcore.
